Rekindling Passion for Progressive Religion in Congregations
A Conversation Between Lay Persons and Scholars
What does it mean to be a "faith community"?
What do we expect of each other? Why?
How can a theologian help us to clarify our own thinking
about these kinds of questions?
This event is designed to put lay persons and scholars in conversation about congregational life, viewing it through progressive theological lenses.
This event is important for:
- any person who thinks about what it means to be faithful
- any person who struggles with building community
- any person who is a leader in a congregation.
Every session will be co-led by a practitioner (clergy or lay) and an expert in the area being discussed. Our goal is to think together, learning from each other. We will use Friedrich Schleiermacher’s deep and comprehensive thinking about congregational life and theology to get us started along with the resources of the theological tradition he inaugurated. We expect to find ourselves agreeing and disagreeing with him and with each other as we go.
Sessions address these concerns of congregational life: growing in Spirit; care of souls; what music is “doing” in worship; what we expect from proclamation; interfaith encounters; and an introduction to the progressive theological tradition
