Iliff on the Road: Islam and the West: Problems & Progress, Prof Sophia Shafi

Description: United Methodist Church of Johnstown will once again convene a Pastor Marilyn Phelps Memorial Lecture featuring Professor Sophia Shafi speaking on “Islam and the West: Problems and Progress” The lecture was originally planned for September but is now scheduled for Oct. 19.

What is going on in Egypt? Is it a coup d‘├ętat? Is it a revolution? Is the military usurping power or did the elected government turn into a dictatorship? Everyone is telling a different story, who can we believe? Is there a path to peace? What should we be praying? The war in Syria continues, and is spilling over into neighboring countries. Who are the REAL players and who is funding them? Is the Muslim brotherhood taking over? How do Iran and Saudi Arabia figure in? Did the Arab Spring fail or are these the birth pains of democracy?

Shafi is a professor of Islamic Studies at Iliff School of Theology. Dr. Shafi will offer us insight into events that are changing the Middle East, as well as informed insight into what the current event might mean for the future of that region and the world. Please plan to attend on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 9-2.
