Spirituality & Medicine: Prayer, Healing & the Heart
Description: Join Albert Hernández, academic vice president, dean of the faculty, and associate professor of the history of Christianity;
Dr. Alan Forker, MD, cardiologist and director, Outpatient Lipid Diabetes Research, MidAmerica Heart Institute of Saint Lukes Hospital, Kansas City, MO; Bonnie Lewallen, RN, CCA, nurse case manager at University of Colorado Hospital, certified Reiki master/teacher, healing touch spiritual ministry practitioner; and Jennifer Forker, MDIV, Iliff alum on the path to Unitarian Universalist ordination; as they examine the role and symbolism of the heart in the history of Western mysticism and religion, and study current scientific understandings about how spiritual practices such as prayer, meditation, and various contemplative exercises influence cardiac health and healing.
The past thirty years of cardiac medical research has yielded profound data on the physical and emotional effects of prayer and meditative practice on cardiac health. With insight from empirical studies and neuro-science, we are able to reconsider the legacy of the world’s spiritual disciplines and consider religious experience in new and exciting ways that can revitalize faith and hope.
