Jennings received The Award for Excellence from the American Academy of Religion (AAR) for his latest book, The Christian Imagination: Theology and the Origins of Race (Yale University Press 2010). In The Christian Imagination, Jennings explores how Christianity’s highly refined process of socialization has inadvertently created segregated societies, arguing that Christianity has forged Christian nations rather than communion between disparate groups and individuals. AAR presents the awards to scholarly publications that make significant contributions to the study of religion. Jennings teaches in the areas of systematic theology and black church and cultural studies. The author of numerous articles, his research interests include these areas as well as liberation theologies, cultural identities, and anthropology.
