Jameson Jones Visiting Preacher, Dr. Laury Silvers

April 24, 2013 11:00am-12:00pm

Description: Iliff welcomes Dr. Laury Silvers, scholar, activist, and imam, as the Spring Quarter Jameson Jones Visiting Preacher. Her sermon is entitled “‘With Hardship Comes Ease’ (Q 94:5): The Voice of Consolation in the Qur’an.” The service will be in the Chapel followed by community meal ($5/person) in Great Hall.

Dr. Silvers has authored, co-authored, and co-edited a variety of books and articles on Sufism in the formative period, and on themes ranging from pious and Sufi women to Muslim women’s religious authority, and on Muslim women’s encounter with the Qur’an. She teaches courses on Islam and gender, and religion studies at the University of Toronto. Silvers co-founded and acts as an imam (prayer leader) and khatib (preacher) at the first Gender-Equal/LGBTQ-Affirming mosque in the U.S. and Canada.

Dr. Silvers’ sermon will reflect on the consoling nature of the Divine Word. The Qur’an is an unvarnished revelation that sometimes depicts human nature at its worst, yet offers a way out, and provides consolation for the pain of simply living through it all. These days, Muslims are often painted into a corner from which they are forced to defend themselves to anyone and everyone that their religion is not what everyone fears. It can be a risky matter to publicly share how one grapples with the harshness of life through the Divine Word. Talking about God’s more easily digested and uplifting messages sometimes seems to be the only way to survive being a Muslim in North America. She hopes that by baring her experience of psychic and bodily salvation through the Qur’an from abuses of authority and control permitted by God, fellow travelers will recognize their own struggles with their own Word and find consolation and healing in our common humanity.

Jameson Jones served as President of The Iliff School of Theology from 1969 to 1981. The family and friends of Dr. Jones established an endowment to fund a series of visiting preachers. These distinguished preachers bring their unique messages to Iliff’s chapel and classroom, enriching students’ preaching styles.
