Iliff on the Road: Netroots Nation Gathering, San Jose, CA
June 20 - June 23, 2013
Description: Iliff will host an information table at Netroots Nation Gathering in San Jose, CA.
The Bay Area is homebase to a large part of the progressive movement. It’s the home of Harvey Milk. Cesar Chavez organized up and down the Valley. Daily Kos, MoveOn.org and Change.org started here. Rebuild the Dream, CREDO and Citizen Engagement Labs (accelerator for Color of Change, Presente, Ultraviolet and others) are based here, as well as organizations like Sierra Club, Rainforest Action Network, the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights and Green For All.
California as a whole often leads the nation in pushing progressive policies and outcomes. It has long led the country in environmental policies, and in 2010 when a sea of red washed over the nation, that wave stopped at the Sierras.

Iliff on the Road: Prof. Jeffrey Mahan, Ring Lake Ranch, WY
June 22, 2013 2:27pm-2:27pm
Description: Professor Jeffrey Mahan, Ralph E. and Norma E. Peck Chair in Religion and Public Communication, and professor of ministry, media and culture, will lead a week-long session, “Imagining the Mountain West,” RingLake Ranch. This session uses film, art and literature to look at the way that the Mountain West has inspired the artistic imagination and the way that human cultures have written their presence on the land. The petroglyphs that mark the ranch and the surrounding region serve as a first text and we will read them in conjunction with Werner Herzog’s amazing documentary, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, which explores the earliest known cave paintings in France. We will also engage the work of later Wyoming artists and authors, including reading some of noted author Annie Proulx’s Wyoming Stories and viewing the work of (and hopefully visiting with) regional painters.
Professor Mahan’s work has focused on religious and theological engagements with both fine and popular film, literature and television. He has also long been involved in field education and other courses that cultivate religious vocation and theological reflection on our lived experience of faith in church, community and culture.
