Iliff on the Road: Emeritus Prof. Vincent Harding, Ring Lake Ranch, WY

July 30, 2013 2:57pm-2:57pm

Description: Vincent Harding, Iliff Emeritus Professor of Religion and Social Transformation, will lead a late July session, “Sharing Our Common Ground” at Ring Lake Ranch, Wyoming. This session will focus on Dr. Harding’s belief that a healthy, multiracial democracy can only be built upon the shared stories of its citizens. We will hear Dr. Harding’s life journey, as well as share the stories of RLR guests. Our conversation will be framed by Howard Thurman’s book The Search for Common Ground.

Vincent Harding is one of the great leaders of the Civil Rights movement. Dr. Harding worked throughout the South in the 1960s on the the anti-segregation campaigns of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Congress of Racial Equality. He drafted speeches for Martin Luther King, including King’s famous anti-Vietnam speech, “A Time to Break Silence.” He was the first director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center and served as senior academic consultant for the PBS television series Eyes on the Prize.

Dr. Harding taught at Iliff from 1981 to 2004. He remains active in community issues as the founder of the Veterans of Hope Project, a multifaceted educational initiative on religion, culture and participatory democracy.
