Iliff’s Justice & Peace and Social Change Education – Changing Lives for More Than a Century

(DENVER) – The Iliff School of Theology’s Master of Arts in Social Change (MASC) and Graduate Certificate in Religion and Social Change are part of a continuing commitment to justice and peace and social change education that has been a cornerstone of an Iliff education since its beginning in 1892.

The MASC degree is a professional program offering active participation in community service and societal change – changing the lives of many in the program and of those served by graduates.

“I was looking for a graduate degree program that would give me the tools, resources, and credibility, along with what I already knew, to address the participants in a non-profit I co-founded,” said Andriette Fields, a recent Iliff MASC graduate. “Through Triple Threat Ministries, founded in 2006, I lead workshops focusing on women, empowering them to see new possibilities for their lives beyond the traditional roles their culture has set for them,” she explained. “Iliff’s goal to attain sustainability in social change arenas aligned with my own goals and was a perfect fit for me.”

Iliff’s MASC curriculum provides an interdisciplinary approach through courses that combine political theory, sociology, ethics, theology, and the history, theory, and practice of social change movements. Iliff serves many faith traditions which provide awareness of religious difference. The motivation and communities within the religious diversity inform our approach to social issues and movements for change toward more just social structures.

Students are encouraged to combine personal and academic reflection with community activism and issue advocacy through the program. The MASC program also includes a first year colloquium experience and internship placement or field education related to a student’s vocational trajectory.
