Iliff Professor Miguel A. De La Torre Elected to Lead Society of Christian Ethics

The Iliff School of Theology is pleased to announce the election of Miguel A. De La Torre, professor of social ethics, as president of the Society of Christian Ethics. De La Torre is the first Hispanic to be elected to this post.

The Society of Christian Ethics promotes scholarly work in Christian ethics and in the relation of Christian ethics to other traditions of ethics; encourages and improves the teaching of these fields in colleges, universities and theological schools; and provides a community of discourse and debate for those engaged professionally within these general fields. A non-denominational scholarly association, the Society draws its members from the faculties of universities, colleges, and theological schools primarily from the United States, Canada, and Europe.

De La Torre joined the Iliff faculty in 2005. The focus of his academic pursuit has been social and political ethics within contemporary U.S. thought, specifically how religion affects race, class, and gender oppression. He specializes in applying a postmodern/postcolonial social theoretical approach to U.S. marginalized spaces to construct a theological and biblical ethics that challenges structures of oppression. He is the author of more than 25 books and publications including; Genesis: A Theological Commentary on the Bible; The Quest for the Historical Satan (co-authored); Liberating Jonah: Toward a Biblical Ethics of Reconciliation; Lily Among the Thorns: Imagining a New Christian Sexuality; Leer la Biblia desde los Marginados; and Doing Christian Ethics from the Margins.
