Our own Dr. Miguel De La Torre will be taking his expertise on Liberation Theology and Migration to across the globe once again. He has received a Fulbright to teach at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany from mid-April 2017 until early June. The Fulbright Specialist Program sends U.S. faculty and professionals to serve as expert consultants on curriculum, faculty development, institutional planning, and related subjects at academic institutions abroad. While there, Dr. De La Torre will teach a course on Liberation Theology in the Americas covering a large set of identities and a course on migration that will incorporate his writing on the subject and his award-winning film, Trails of Hope and Terror.
Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest universities in Germany. Dr. De La Torre is looking forward to the connections he can make there with students, other professors, even taxi drivers. The relationships that he established on his last Fulbright in Indonesia in 2009 still have an influence on him today.
Trips like these he says “help us move beyond the parochial and think more globally. It helps to write with a global rather just from a US-perspective.” In particular, a trip in Germany will help him make connections between migration in American and European contexts. These experiences help him to speak with a “gravitas” on these subjects and move his scholarship toward a stronger and more personally informed global worldview.
Thank you for your work, Dr. De La Torre, and we look forward to your return!
