Iliff Expresses Support in Light of Tragedy
July 20, 2012
Dear Iliff Community
Once again our community has been impacted by tragedy. This morning’s mass shooting in Aurora has left all of us stunned and shaken. We are all asking and will continue to ask for some time, “why did this happen here again?”
While no one can understand the totality of this situation, we offer our support and condolences to those who have been impacted by this act. There are no explanations that will ever be sufficient. In the coming days, the story will unfold and we will learn more. At this time, I ask that you keep the families and friends of those who have been hurt or injured, the law enforcement, emergency and medical personnel who have responded courageously, the chaplains who are providing strength to those in need, and the counselors who will be necessary for guiding the victims through the process of healing from the traumatic memories of this act, in your thoughts and prayers.
To that end, we are opening the Iliff Chapel today from noon until 5 p.m. for anyone wishing to use it for reflection and prayer. We have invited the students and staff from our neighbors next door at DU to use our Chapel as well. Professors Larry Graham and Carrie Doehring have already been in contact with their professional networks to provide their counseling expertise. Iliff’s Dean of Chapel, Cathie Kelsey has been in conversation with the UM Conference Office to offer our support as needed.
We would also encourage anyone who feels that they need counseling assistance during this difficult time, to seek care. There are several mental health resources that can assist you, including many low-cost options.
Please watch our website or follow us on Twitter or Facebook to learn more about Iliff’s response to this tragedy. Once we have the blog set up, we’ll send that word out on Facebook and Twitter, as well as post it to our website. We’ll also send an e-blast to our alums.
The Iliff School of Theology stands in solidarity with all who have been affected by these events as we lift up our heartfelt prayers for healing, peace and spiritual grace and offer our pastoral resources and presence to the wider community.
Albert Hernández, Ph.D.
