Today\, the city attracts thousands of new residents each year\, including the LGBTQ people from the rural West and digital nomads from around the nations seeking a welcoming community where they can thrive. In LGBTQ Denver Nash showcases how the city evolved from its pre-1970s history of rebuking gay people to a magnet for LGBTQ residents and the capital of the first state to elect and reelect the nation’s first openly gay governor. \nAbout Phil Nash \nA Michigan native\, Phil Nash made Denver his home in 1976 and launched a career in LGBTQ activism\, journalism\, and organizational leadership. He helped found\, and was the first staff member of the Gay Community Center of Colorado (today known as The Center on Colfax). He later became editor of Out Front\, Colorado’s leading LGBTQ publication in the early 1980s. He also wrote for The Advocate\, Westword\, and other local and national news outlets. He helped found and served as first board chair of the Colorado AIDS Project. As an out gay professional\, Nash later worked in a series of senior communications roles in civic and philanthropic organizations\, including as an advisor to Denver Mayor Federico Peña. In LGBTQ Denver\, Nash documents more than five decades of Denver’s LGBTQ history\, much of which he witnessed firsthand\, reported\, and photographed. “I wrote LGBTQ Denver as yet another way to help build a stronger community\,” says Nash\, “especially at a time when darker forces in our society want to turn back the clock and erase the evidence of our existence.”

Harding Day at Iliff\, where we celebrate the life and work of Vincent G. and Rosemarie Freeney Harding and their commitment to education\, justice\, and peace toward building a multiethnic\, multiracial\, multigenerational\, and multi-faith democracy.  \nWe invite you for an evening celebration\, where we’ll kick things off with hors d’oeuvres and an African-American quilt display. Join us for a performance by the Spirituals Project\, followed by our keynote speaker\, Dr. Cheryl LaRoche\, historian\, and underground railroad scholar\, who will share more about her work on Paul Quinn\, an African Methodist Episcopal Bishop who guided enslaved people to freedom through the underground railroad. \nAbout the Speaker:\nHistorical Archaeologist Dr. Cheryl Janifer LaRoche began her career as an archaeological conservator\, preserving the grave goods from the African Burial Ground archaeological site in New York City. Dr. LaRoche’s expertise includes archaeology\, African American history\, and material culture. Her work on the Underground Railroad\, free Black communities\, and the AME Church is unparalleled – this work is what brought William Paul Quinn to her attention. She has contributed to numerous scholarly works\, museums\, documentaries\, and archaeological projects and is a dynamic and compelling speaker. Most recently she has been working as an ethnohistorian\, collecting family stories from the descendants of the those who were once held in slavery on National Park Service sites. She has worked for numerous cultural and historical institutions\, including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture\, where she was the project historian for the “Cultural Expressions” inaugural exhibition. She is an associate research professor in Historic Preservation in the School of Architecture at the University of Maryland\, College Park. She is grateful for the numerous awards she has received across her career. Dr. LaRoche is the author of Free Black Communities and the Underground Railroad: the Geography of Resistance. Her latest book\, Apostle of Liberation: AME Bishop Paul Quinn and the Underground Railroad was published by Rowman & Littlefield earlier this year.  \nAbout the Spirituals Project:\nIn 1998\, The Spirituals Project was founded by Arthur C. Jones to preserve and revitalize the music and teachings of the sacred folk songs called “spirituals\,” created and first sung by African Americans in slavery. The Spirituals Project is a past recipient of the Denver Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. The Project has presented a wide variety of high-profile musical and educational programs over the years\, including a national conference on spirituals in 2013 featuring poet Nikki Giovanni as keynote speaker\, and a historic concert in 2009 at Denver’s Ellie Caulkins Opera House in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s 80th birthday\, featuring the renowned mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves as a guest artist. His work has earned him Screen Actors Guild and Tony Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award\, and three Emmy Awards. A frequent collaborator with documentarian Ken Burns\, David has won three Emmys for his voice-over performances in Jackie Robinson\, A Necessary War\, and Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson. \nDavid has also enthralled viewers with his vocal talents in animated works such as The Princess and the Frog\, Rick and Morty\, Gargoyles\, and the Prime Video hit series\, Hazbin Hotel. David recently appeared in Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning film\, American Fiction\, Jordan Peele’s Nope\, and is also known for his prolific work in films such as 21 Bridges\, Crash\, There’s Something About Mary\, and many more. \nOn the small screen\, David recently finished Duster\, a new series from JJ Abrams\, and The Gray House\, produced by Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman; completed five seasons starring as Bishop James Greenleaf in Greenleaf on the OWN Network; and has been featured on series such as Blackish and Community. In this dynamic gathering\, preaching and pastoral leaders will explore the intersections of creativity\, care\, and communication through three rich workshop experiences—all designed to inspire more compelling and life-giving proclamation. \nWORKSHOP SESSIONS\n1:30 PM – “Fostering Creativity in Preaching”\nRev. Dr. Lee Butler\nThis session will discuss creativity as a playful approach to biblical interpretation.  Focusing on biblical narratives as the foundation for considering human transformation\, the sermonic communications of God’s love will be grounded in psychological theories to help engage the text as a living Divine and human document. \n3:15 p.m. – “Resilient Leadership – Lessons from Grief\, Crisis\, and Connection” \nMeredith Parfet\, MA Pastoral and Spiritual Care\, MBA\nThis workshop challenges ministers and leaders to rethink how we approach crisis—not as a disruption to manage\, but as a transformative opportunity.  We will explore how grief manifests in many forms and offers practical frameworks for holding necessary but often stigmatized conversations\, particularly around death and loss. Each year ITD fosters diverse and authentic interfaith conversations at the intersection of theology and disability. Practically\, this looks like collectively engaging in plenary sessions\, workshops\, and networking; offering a PhD seminar for current doctoral students; and providing a community day to connect more deeply with organizations within the host city. We honor the unique and diverse experiences of our participants and clients. \nPractice Foundational Somatic Training for Real Self-Care\nEmbodied awareness matters in end-of-life work. We emphasize the importance of somatic awareness and Polyvagal Theory as crucial for a sustainable end-of-life doula practice\, both in helping those we serve and for ourselves. \nFocus on Interpersonal Communication\nEnd-of-life care includes not just the dying\, but their communities of care and all those who love them. Her dissertation entitled\, “Religions and Spirituality as Resources for African American Family in End-of-Life Care” has led her down the path of research\, teaching\, and the praxis of End-of-Life Care. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Dr. Wallace was introduced to the world of Death Doulas by two colleagues: one a former attorney and Director for Disability Services now a Death Doula herself and the other\, the founder of “Quality of Life now “Care Doula Education” who was also the Vice President of the National End-of-Life Doula Alliance. For more than seven years\, Dr. Wallace functioned herself as an end-of-life doula. Beth is also a palliative care/end of life doula\, having trained with the Conscious Dying Institute and INELDA and is a member in good standing with NEDA. But how do our beliefs shape our religious communities? How do our beliefs about community\, identity and belonging guide our spaces of worship? Do we need to rethink what we believe about church? \nFor our November 19 Renewal session\, Rev. Dr. Jenny Whitcher (PhD ’12) will share about her work at the Juniper Formation\, a Denver faith community that is trying to reimagine church. Join us for conversation about religion\, belief\, and community in action. Wednesday\, November 19 via Zoom from 12:00 to 1:30 pm MT. \nPresenters\nRev. Dr. Jenny Whitcher (she/her) is the Minister of Prophetic Formation and Co-Founder of Juniper Formation. Jenny is an entrepreneurial minister\, community organizer\, and theologian committed to social justice. She has over 20 years of experience coaching and mentoring leaders\, teaching\, and developing community partnerships. Her work spans nonprofit\, congregations\, and higher education. Her areas of expertise include: change management; entrepreneurial and prophetic ministry formation; democratic culture\, leadership\, and pedagogy; and social change theory and practice. \nShe is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ (UCC) and was the recipient of the Peacemaker Award from the Rocky Mountain Conference of the United Church of Christ in 2006. She has a B.A. from New York University\, an M.A. in International Human Rights from the University of Denver\, and a Ph.D. in Religion and Theological Studies from Iliff School of Theology & University of Denver. \nBry Brannan (they/them)\, Iliff MDiv Student\, Minister of Land Discernment\, accompanies congregations discerning ways to utilize their Land and buildings for community flourishing and intergenerational resilience. In 2026 they are launching a new ministry\, the Root & Reckon Community of Practice for Rocky Mountain congregations who are reckoning with racism and colonization through Land stories. Students come to Iliff with a myriad of traditions and backgrounds\, but they all gather in this unique place to learn and grow together. \nFor our January Renewal Session\, four of our current students will share about their beliefs and views of the world\, the story of how they got to Iliff\, and their plans for after graduation. Join us to go inside the Iliff classroom with these students and hear what they have discovered about their own beliefs during their time here.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for January Renewal Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLex Dunbar\, (he/they) MDiv ’25\, Joint PhD Student \nLex Dunbar (He/They)\, a proud Norf-Philly native and recent transplant to Denver\, CO\, is a Black Non-Binary Transman\, educator\, activist\, and community leader. His unwavering commitment to justice and change is a source of inspiration\, as Lex draws on personal narrative and diverse theoretical frameworks\, including Womanism\, Black liberation theology\, Transhumanist Deism\, Afro-Futurism\, and more. Currently a Ph.D. student in the Joint Doctoral Program in the Study of Religion at the University of Denver and Iliff School of Theology\, Lex recently earned their second Master’s degree and became a certified Death and Grief Doula. A dynamic workshop facilitator and indecent preacher\, Lex has also taught as an adjunct professor\, developed educational programs\, and contributed to numerous conferences and panels on issues of race\, justice\, and religious liberation. With a passion for community service\, Lex amplifies marginalized voices\, advocates for liberation\, and fosters a more just world.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJosh Perez\, (he/him) MTS ’25\, Joint PhD Student \nJosh Perez is a creative and academic based in Denver\, CO\, where he explores the intersection of storytelling\, lived religion\, and the human experience. With a multidisciplinary approach that spans filmmaking\, audio\, writing\, and photography\, Josh focuses on the spaces where artistry and daily life meet. Currently serving as the Creative Lead for the Institute of Religion\, Culture\, & Politics at the Iliff School of Theology\, Josh holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of New Mexico and a Master’s in Theological Studies from Iliff. His recent thesis\, “Laundry and Taxes: Cinema as Portals from Domination Into Worlds of Liberation\,” highlights his research into film reception and the ways cinema orients us in the world. He is currently in his second year in the Joint Doctoral Program at the University of Denver and Iliff School of Theology. Beyond his academic work\, Josh collaborates on Sweet & Condensed\, a multimedia project and newsletter created by people who love people\, movies\, and the magic that emerges when they intersect.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaralyn Ware\, (she/her) Current MDiv Student \nCara Ware is in her final year of the M.Div program at Iliff & has served as the 2024-2025 & 2025-2026 Student Senate co-chair. She is a candidate for ordination as an elder and the leadership development representative for the Mountain Sky United Methodist Conference\, and currently appointed as licensed local pastor at Brentwood UMC in Denver. While at Iliff\, Cara’s work has focused on practical & pastoral theology\, presenting at multiple international conferences on topics such as moral injury and postcolonial theory. Beyond studying at Iliff\, Cara has a background in neuroscience and works as a clinical research analyst for the CU Anschutz Medical Campus.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLiz Wolfert\, (she/her) Current MDiv Student \nLiz Wolfert (she/her) is a third year MDiv student\, a postulant for the priesthood in the Episcopal Church\, and a long-time interfaith practitioner. She brings a wide variety of professional and vocational experiences to her community and person-to-person work. She is currently part of community building around Iliff student life; community gardening; Circle of Trust; international\, interfaith\, and intercultural solidarity; mental health and recovery; and more.

But what does it look like to minister out in the community? How are faith leaders standing up\, speaking out\, and providing support outside the pulpit? \nFor our March Renewal session\, we will be joined by a panel of three Iliff alumni/ae who are doing the work of leading inside and outside traditional religious spaces to live out their call when they aren’t standing in the pulpit. This session will provide an opportunity to hear about the work a minister can do outside of their congregation to give our community a better understanding of how activism and action outside the church walls are part of a pastor’s role\, and an idea of how we can support religious leaders in their work in organizing\, mutual aid and social change.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for March Renewal Here

He is the editor of the multi-authored first volume\, The Word Became Culture (2024) and is the author of the third volume\, Queer God de Amor (2022). This anniversary offers us a chance to reflect upon the land\, the territory\, and the creation of the State of Colorado\, reminding us of the varied experiences of all who today call Colorado home.  \nIn what ways have we romanticized Colorado’s statehood? The impact of statehood on Indigenous communities is far from glorious. This land was cleared to become a “safe” home for settlers amidst gold rush and the Civil War. With fears of Confederate expansion and Union protection\, Indian lives became meaningless. As a part of Iliff’s Indigenous commitments\, we are hosting “The Romance of Colorado Statehood: The Indian Trauma and Tragedy of Colorado 150” on April 17-18\, 2026\, in Shattuck Hall. \nThis free event will feature a panel of Indigenous voices\, including community organizers\, lawyers\, and educators. We will engage in some social activism training and organizing during both days. DESCRIPTION:April Renewal Session\nTaking Action with RMIAN\nWednesday\, April 29 from noon to 1:30 pm MT via Zoom\nThis year\, our Renewal sessions have considered where our beliefs inspire actions–from what we believe about grief and our bodies\, to the actions and beliefs of our religious leaders and forebearers\, to the ways our Iliff students are living out their beliefs. To finish off our Renewal season\, we are asking the question\, What can we do right now to take action in our beliefs? \nFor our April Renewal session\, Mekela Goehring\, Esq.\, friends of Iliff and Executive Director of the Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network\, will be joining us to share about the actions we can take today to live out our beliefs in equity\, diversity\, and acceptance. She will share about the network and how we can be part of advocating for our neighbors. \nRegister for April Renewal Here\nSpeaker: Mekela Goehring\, Esq.\nExecutive Director\, Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network \nMekela Goehring has served as RMIAN’s Executive Director since 2005. She began working at RMIAN in 2003 as the organization’s first detention staff attorney\, representing detained clients before the Executive Office for Immigration Review\, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services\, and the Board of Immigration Appeals. She is a frequent speaker on issues involving immigration law and policy\, and works with numerous committees and groups to expand access to justice for individuals in immigration proceedings in Colorado and beyond. Mekela has served as an adjunct professor for externships at the University of Colorado Law School. Prior to working at RMIAN\, Mekela clerked for Judge Casebolt at the Colorado Court of Appeals. Mekela’s passion for working for social justice through the legal system began during fellowships at Community Legal Services in Yuma\, Arizona\, and Colorado Legal Services in Denver\, Colorado. Mekela graduated summa cum laude from the University of Colorado at Boulder and earned her J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School. She was admitted to the Colorado bar in 2002. Mekela has been a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association since 2003. In 2013\, the American Immigration Lawyers Association awarded Mekela the Arthur C. Helton Human Rights Award for her outstanding service in advancing the cause of human rights. In 2018\, the University of Colorado Law School awarded Mekela the Dean’s Choice—Dean Edward C. King Making a Difference Award. In her free time\, Mekela enjoys spending time with her husband\, two children\, and all their animals in the Colorado outdoors. \nAt Iliff\, we spend much of our time exploring theology\, ethics\, the world\, and ourselves—wrestling with big ideas and deep questions. But what happens when we move beyond the classroom? Where do we see these beliefs lived out in the world? Who is showing up in real and authentic ways in everyday life—and how can we support them\, learn from them\, and join them? \nThis year\, our Renewal series focuses on the powerful intersection of belief and action. We’ll hear from individuals both within and beyond the Iliff community who are putting their convictions into practice and making a tangible difference. Join us as we explore how ideas take shape in the world around us—and what it means for each of us to do the same.

A key component of the exhibition is a heightened emphasis on community\, serving as a beacon of light and hope. An enrolled member of the Osage Nation\, he is the author of The People and the Word: Reading Native Nonfiction\, co-author of American Indian Literary Nationalism. part of the Native Critics Collective that published Reasoning Together\, co-author of Like a Hurricane: The Indian Movement from Alcatraz to Wounded Knee (with Paul Chaat Smith) and Tribal Secrets: Recovering American Indian Intellectual Traditions. He has recently published an edited volume\,The World of Indigenous North America(Routledge)\, edits the NAIS (the journal of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association)\, and edits a book series\, Indigenous Americas for the University of Minnesota Press. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Warrior has served the ASA in numerous roles\, including as a member of the elected National Council and its Executive Committee (2009-12)\, two times as a co-chair of the Program Committee (2007-8\, 2014-15)\, and as a member of the Program Committee. Warrior was a member of the six-member steering committee and then acting council that founded the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association. In 2010\, he was elected NAISA’s founding president and is now (with Jean O’Brien) serving as founding co-editor of NAISA’s scholarly journal. He holds degrees from Union Theological Seminary (Ph.D.\, Systematic Theology)\, Yale University (M.A.\, Religion)\, and Pepperdine University (B.A. summa cum laude\, Speech Communication). He has also served as an appointed official in the Osage Nation government and is a member of the committee responsible for maintaining the Osage ceremonial in-losh-ka dance in the Grayhorse district. Along with his scholarly work\, he has worked on numerous film projects\, including the final episode of WGBH-Boston’s “We Shall Remain\,’ which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival\, and the History Channel’s “America: The Story of Us.” \nHis academic and journalistic writing has appeared in a wide variety of publications\, including American Quarterly\, PMLA\, MLA’s Profession\, Interventions\, News from Indian Country\, Indian Country Today Media Network\,Village Voice\, UTNE Reader\, and High Times. In 2011\, The People and the Word and he and two coauthors of American Indian Literary Nationalismwere the inaugural recipients of the Beatrice Medicine Award for Scholarly Writing from the Native American Literature Symposium and Warrior has also received awards from the Gustavus Myers Foundation\, the Native American Journalists Association\, the Church Press Association\, and others.
