Together\, we’ll explore powerful stories of hope\, healing\, and action—each rooted in a shared vision of justice and liberation. \nLife in Authoritarian and Autocratic Times: Lessons from the Book of Acts \nGovernment agents rounding people up on the streets. Prisons crowded with ethnic and racial minorities. Increasing political violence and violent rhetoric. Wealth concentrating in the hands of the few\, and public officials on the take. Politicians insisting that up is down and falsehood is truth. \nAround the world and in the United States\, autocratic and authoritarian governments are on the rise. We live in a time of surging nationalisms\, swelling xenophobia\, and attacks against cultural and academic institutions. The Book of Acts was written two thousand years ago in very different circumstances\, but it has something to say about the kind of world we are living in now. Acts describes the way governments deploy violence and prejudice to meet their aims. Acts follows its heroes into prisons\, where people like Paul and Peter and Silas languish in captivity for other people’s political purposes. We see mob actions\, economic protectionism\, and the twisting of history to suit the narratives of power. \nDrawing from two new books about power\, violence\, and the Book of Acts\, Dr/ Eric C. Smith\, Associate Professor of Early Christian Texts and Traditions at Iliff\, will offer lessons from Acts for life in authoritarian and autocratic regimes. We will notice the patterns and habits of power found in Acts\, and we will pay attention to how those same patterns show up in our own world. And–drawing from the experiences of Jesus’ first followers in the wake of the crucifixion–we will identify strategies for resisting the demands of power and for organizing ourselves to share resources\, find common purpose\, understand each other across differences\, and live against the grain of the power and violence of our times. \nDetails: \nMonday\, October 19  \n5:00 – 5:45 PM (MST): Light meal and connection \n5:45 PM: Lecture begins\, followed by Q&A and deep discussion \nLocation: In-person at Iliff or online via livestream. McKee-Culpepper\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n				 Join us for Iliff’s Pulpit+ Exchange Series\, an inspiring series of in-person and virtual gatherings where clergy\, lay leaders\, activists\, scholars\, ministers\, journalists\, and community organizers come together to wrestle with the most pressing questions of our time. Together\, we’ll explore powerful stories of hope\, healing\, and action—each rooted in a shared vision of justice and liberation. \nMoqueca as Welcome Table Theology: Extending Dr. Rachel Harding’s Vision Toward an Oceanic Commons \nIn There Is a River\, Dr. Vincent Harding set out to offer a “rigorous analysis of the long black movement toward justice\, equity and truth\,” while giving himself permission to celebrate it. He called that movement a river\, and the Harding and Freeney family has long been a confluence within it. \nThe family’s charge was teaching\, scholarship\, theology\, and the arts. Dr. Rachel Elizabeth Harding took up all four and added a fifth: nourishment of the soul\, mind\, and body. A poet and scholar of Afro-Atlantic religions\, she carried the river farther south\, to Salvador\, Bahia\, where her study of Candomblé\, A Refuge in Thunder\, showed how enslaved and freed Africans made spaces of refuge and belonging. With her mother\, Rosemarie Freeney Harding\, she wrote in Remnants of the hospitality at the foundation of their family’s spirituality. From this work came her idea of a “welcome table”: a confluence of practices long known to carry the work of social justice\, resting on critical scholarship in liberation theology and emerging understandings of the political status of Blackness. Those who knew her also tasted the idea. She could quiet a room with a pot of moqueca\, the Bahian seafood stew she served to friends\, students\, and elders alike. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Malaika McKee gives Rachel’s vision formal language as welcome table theology and carries her recipe out to sea as social justice scholarship and praxis. She argues that the scholarship and the stew are one work\, and that the oceans\, which supply its ingredients\, are humanity’s shared welcome table: the meeting point where something as simple as hospitality asks hard questions about equity\, fairness\, social justice\, and planetary safety. Who is served first? Is there still enough in the pot? What happens when the table is depleted? This is a liberation theology grounded in the theory of the commons and practiced at the tables where we meet to create justice. \nExpect an evening of story\, scholarship\, and remembrance\, followed by open dialogue. Scholars\, practitioners\, and all who knew a Harding table are welcome. \nDr. Malaika W. McKee-Culpepper is an Assistant Professor of Education Policy\, Organization\, and Leadership and an Assistant Professor at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) in the College of Education at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She was a contributing member of a University of Illinois team that received the 2016 HPC Innovation Excellence Award. Hyperion Research and the HPC User Forum Steering Committee created this award to recognize noteworthy achievements by users of high-performance computing (HPC)\, including simulation\, AI\, other advanced analytics\, quantum computing\, and other methods and technologies.          \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. McKee-Culpepper has published the following:                                                                             \n\n\nBrown\, N. This exhibit runs through February 2027. \nAbout the Gallery: Iliff recently transformed and opened the Cathie Kelsey Art Gallery\, named in honor of our former Dean of Faculty\, Dr. Cathie Kelsey. The gallery is open during Iliff’s normal business hours. \nAbout the exhibition: Illusions of Home\, in the words of artist Anthony Suber\, “brings together works spanning multiple chapters of my artistic practice\, anchored by a central title piece that interrogates the lived realities of the Black middle class. Rooted in personal experience\, the exhibition explores the fraught search for true liberation\, sovereignty\, and belonging within structures that often promise stability yet defer genuine freedom. Through multi-layered assemblage\, symbolic iconography\, and motifs of birth and transcendence\, the collection weaves a narrative around the enduring pursuit of self-determination.” \nAbout the Artist: Anthony Suber is a Texas-born multi-disciplinary artist based in South Texas. He holds a BFA from the University of Houston and an MFA from Houston Christian University. Suber’s practice spans exhibitions\, public projects\, and multi-layered activations presented nationally and internationally\, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki\, Greece; Project Row Houses in Houston\, TX; Tinney Contemporary in Nashville\, TN; the University Museum at Texas Southern University; the Tulsa Race Massacre Symposium in Tulsa\, OK; and the Houston Museum of African American Culture. His solo exhibitions include Red Bud Arts Center\, LRT Gallery\, Cindy Lisica Gallery\, and Nicole Longnecker Gallery in Houston\, Texas. In addition to his studio work\, Suber is a Professor of Art at the University of Houston’s Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts and serves as Creative Director of “The Blackman Project”\, a nonprofit addressing art and mental health. His work has been featured in Arts and Culture Texas\, Glasstire\, The Houston Chronicle\, and Free Press Houston. Suber was the recipient of the Artadia Art Prize in 2022 and the BIPOC Arts Network and Fund Award in 2025. \nReception information TBA. The inherent inquiry-based approach centers questions about how technological design and implementation shapes\, and is shaped by\, human systems and experiences.  \nThis approach combines critical analysis (i.e. history\, power\, values\, resources) with creative foresight (scenarios\, prototypes\, policies) and participatory methods (co?design\, stakeholder narratives). Through iterative cycles of imagination\, research\, prototyping\, and reflection\, we ask: Who benefits? Who is harmed or excluded? What social practices will this enable or disrupt? What unintended outcomes may occur? How might we change the future today? \nThe result is a design that is not only usable and useful but accountable and anticipatory—technology built  not merely as an instrument but as an active\, dynamic partner to human life \nVideo Links \nICE at Airports\, IL Primaries & AfroFuturism as Resistance | The Signal LIVE Ep 13  \nTHE MAPS.
