He uses the wisdom of these spaces to engage in critical and constructive analysis on Black posthumanism\, artificial intelligence and pluriversal future realities. He is also the founder of the Seekr Project\, a distinctly Black conversational artificial intelligence with mental health capacities. Philip has theorized artificial cognitive architectures for synthetic evolving life forms (SELF)\, presented on emotionally regulating and spiritual experience inducing brain computer interfaces\, and has constructed block chain protocols and conceptual logistics infrastructures for a world leader in the industrial hemp space.Dr. Butler is Partner Director of Iliff’s AI Institute where he leads the 8020 project\, where the institute works to change how computers see people\, relate to culturally iterative languages and build the bones for a data ownership model that hopefully creates a relational framework for the way AI is made around the globe.He is also the author of Black Transhuman Liberation Theology: Spirituality and Technology and most recently the editor of Critical Black Futures: Speculative Theories and Explorations. He has published in journals such as The Black Scholar\, Journal of Posthuman Studies and the Journal of Future Studies. DESCRIPTION:Register \nLecture Title: Decolonizing the Church: The Great Paradox for Leaders Today \nWhat does it mean to decolonize the church? Is decolonization possible? If not\, what can leaders do in the here and now to unravel the “threads” of control\, order\, and stasis? Through an examination of enduring themes of leadership such as individualism\, power\, and expertise\, we can begin to understand how the very fabric of our being as religious institutions remains woven together with the ways of empire. Only once such threads in the fabric are revealed and pulled might clergy and congregations take on the difficult and necessary work of reweaving the “garment of destiny.” \nPulpit+ Exchange Series \nDuring an April 17\, 1960\, “Meet the Press” interview\, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated\, “I think it is one of the tragedies of our nation\, one of the shameful tragedies\, that 11 o’clock on Sunday morning is one of the most segregated hours\, if not the most segregated hours in Christian America.” Sadly\, Dr. King’s speech sounds like it was delivered yesterday. In large part\, this shameful tragedy remains in 2023. Iliff’s Pulpit+ Exchange Series (supported by the Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative from Lilly Endowment Inc.) is designed to help ordained clergy and lay leaders interrogate this continued status in American churches. It is also designed to place new foundations for education\, dialogue\, action\, and growth within and between congregations. \nAbout the Evening’s Agenda \nJoin other clergy and lay leaders for a light meal from 5:00 pm to 5:30 pm (MST). The lecture will begin at 5:30 pm. An opportunity to ask Dr. Lizardy-Hajbi questions and engage in discussions with colleagues will follow. \nAbout the Lecturer \nJoining the faculty in 2018\, Dr. Lizardy-Hajbi oversees contextual education\, co-directs the Doctor of Ministry in Prophetic Leadership\, and teaches in the fields of leadership theory and praxis\, congregational and community formation/change\, practical theology\, and applied research methods. In particular\, her interests include organizational leadership\, liberative theological and postcolonial approaches to ministry\, church vitality and growth\, young adult spirituality\, and intersectional pedagogical practices. Dr. Lizardy-Hajbi is co-editor of Explore: Vocational Discovery in Ministry (Rowman & Littlefield\, 2022) and has written several book chapters\, journal articles\, and national and denominational research reports. At present\, she is a regional advisor for the Exploring the Pandemic Impact on Congregations (EPIC) National Research Project and a Research Fellow with the Center for Church Management at Villanova University. Additionally\, Dr. Lizardy-Hajbi currently chairs the ATS Research and Data Advisory Committee and serves on the AAR Committee on Teaching and Learning\, Academy of Religious Leadership steering committee\, and Journal of Religious Leadership editorial board. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ\, her ministry has included Christian education and faith formation\, intercultural and interreligious student affairs in higher education\, hospital chaplaincy\, and denominational leadership and research. Dr. Lizardy-Hajbi delights in journeying alongside students as they nurture capacities for practical-prophetic leadership within their respective communities and contexts.

He earned his Ph.D. in Theology\, Philosophy\, and Cultural Theory at the Iliff School of Theology and the University of Denver. His scholarly interests lie in bodies\, sexuality\, identity\, culture\, language\, and religious experience. His primary fields of study include continental philosophy\, cultural and queer theory\, Latinx studies\, critical race theory\, and Pentecostal studies. He has been a fellow at the Human Rights Campaign Summer Institute of the Religion and Faith Program and the Hispanic Theological Initiative at Princeton. Jared has over 10 years of experience in leading\, facilitating and developing dialogue around diversity\, equity and inclusion in both religious and non-religious spaces. He has taught in formal and informal settings as both faculty and consultant. As an adjunct professor at the Iliff School of Theology Jared teaches a diverse population of students how to better engage and lead their churches and communities with regard to issues of diversity\, equity and inclusion. This work reflects Jared’s passion of bringing people together to have dialogue that matters across differences\, as well as his academic work\, which has focused on theologies of inclusion and the effects of religious and social politics on the lives of queer folk and people of color.

Join us one week before Pentecost 2023\, for a lively discussion about these ancient legacies and their continued role in Christian revitalization and healing based on Hernández’ book\, Subversive Fire: The Untold Story of Pentecost (Emeth Press\, 2011). \nAbout Pulpit+ Exchange \nIliff’s Pulpit+ Exchange Series (supported by the Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative from Lilly Endowment Inc.) provides space for a diverse array of ordained clergy and lay leaders to gather for a meal and grapple with challenging issues. An opportunity to ask Dr. Hernández questions and engage in discussions with colleagues will follow. \nAbout the Evening’s Lecturer \nHernández joined the Iliff faculty in 2001. He teaches courses in the history of Christianity from Medieval to Early Modern times with additional expertise in the history of the ancient Hellenistic-Roman period. His research and teaching areas include the history of mysticism and pneumatology; Muslim and Christian relations beginning with the Crusades; religious diversity in medieval Iberia and the Spanish Empire; and the history of medicine and pandemics. Hernández led the faculty design team that created the Authentic Engagement Program™ focusing his contribution on human flourishing and the philosophy of Happiness. \nHernández is the author of Subversive Fire: The Untold Story of Pentecost (Emeth Press)\, and co-author with Miguel De La Torre of The Quest for the Historical Satan (Fortress Press)\, a theological best-seller exploring Satan’s story and the problem of evil. He has addressed local\, regional\, and national gatherings and religious organizations about the legacies of the Crusades and Medieval Spain for a pluralistic\, interreligious post-9/11 world. \nHernández served as Iliff’s senior vice president for academic affairs and faculty dean from 2009 to 2017. His administrative service included serving as interim president\, chief operations officer\, and associate dean for academic affairs. He has over thirty years of experience in different educational settings as an administrator\, curriculum developer\, and successful change-agent for organizational management systems. His current writing projects and recent classes focus on medical history and spiritual healing; Italian Renaissance humanism after the Black Death; mysticism in the Spanish Reformation; and the history of social justice.

DESCRIPTION:Register \nThe Evening’s Lecture \n“Why Progressive Christianity Isn’t Progressive Enough (And What It Would Take To Fix It)” with Dr. Antony Alumkal\, Associate Professor of Sociology of Religion at the Iliff School of Theology \nThe movement known as Progressive Christianity presents itself as advancing the Christian tradition by integrating cutting-edge knowledge and abandoning the oppressive tendencies of conservative forms of Christianity. But a critical look at the movement reveals that it is rife with white\, male\, and middle-class privilege. Additionally\, movement leaders have often relied on outdated scholarship and mirrored the thinking of the Christian Right. \nWe will discuss three of Progressive Christianity’s formative figures—Jesus Seminar founder Robert Funk\, biblical scholar Marcus Borg\, and Episcopal Bishop John Shelby Spong—and how their ideas failed to live up to the “progressive” label. DESCRIPTION:Register \nJoin us for a conversation with Dr. Harding and Dr. Fermin to explore how engaging in mysticism influences and sustains us for justice work! \nMore about our speakers: \nRachel Elizabeth Harding\, Ph.D. (she/her) is a poet\, historian and scholar of religions of the Afro-Atlantic diaspora. A native of Atlanta\, Georgia\, Dr. Harding chairs the Ethnic Studies department of the University of Colorado Denver and writes about religion\, creativity and social justice in the experience of communities of African descent in the US and Brazil. Dr. Harding is author of two books: A Refuge in Thunder\, a history of the Afro-Brazilian religion\, Candomblé; and more recently\, Remnants: A Memoir of Spirit\, Activism and Mothering\, co-written with her mother\, Rosemarie Freeney Harding\, on the role of compassion and mysticism in African American social justice organizing. \nDr. Harding is an ebômi (ritual elder) in the Terreiro do Cobre Candomblé community in Salvador\, Bahia\, Brazil. \nHarding’s honors include Cave Canem Fellowships\, the Sterling Brown Distinguished Visiting Professorship at Williams College\, an honorary doctorate from the Starr-King School for the Ministry and the Civil Rights Award from the Colorado Black Roundtable. \nBaranda J. Fermin\, Ph.D. (they/them) is a writer\, speaker\, yoga teacher\, pastor and community curator. Their professional work builds the human capacity and organizational potential for transformative change\, leading to whole\, healthy\, loving and creative relationships and communities. As an accomplished leader in the fields of community development\, nonprofit leadership\, higher education\, as well as equity and access\, their expertise has shifted the way that communities engage in development\, change agents create strategy\, and leaders measure outcomes. Dr. Zine is Professor of Sociology & Religion & Culture (Muslim Studies) at Wilfrid Laurier University\, in Ontario\, Canada. As an Everding Distinguished Lecturer\, Dr. Zine will give a public lecture on Tuesday\, April 25 at 7 p.m. (MDT) in Shattuck Hall at Iliff School of Theology. The title of her lecture is “Under Siege: Islamophobia and the 9/11 Generation”. Please RSVP for the lecture here: Everding Lecture Dr. Jasmin Zine \nMore about our speakers: \nDr. Zine is author of the book: Under Siege: Islamophobia and the 9/11 Generation\, (McGill-Queens University\nPress\, 2022) based on a 6-year study funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council\n(SSHRC). She is also author of another SSHRC funded study mapping the Canadian Islamophobia Industry\nthat examines organized networks of anti-Muslim bigotry. \nAs a public intellectual she served as the co-chair of the Islamophobia sub-committee of the Ontario\nAnti-Racism Directorate and has testified at the 2017 Canadian Heritage Parliamentary sub-committee\nmeetings on Motion 103 addressing Islamophobia\, systemic racism\, and religious discrimination as well as the\n2019 Parliamentary Hearings on On-Line Hate. Dr. Zine also presented to the UN Special Rapporteur on\nFreedom of Religion or Belief regarding Islamophobia in Canada and was an invited speaker at the National\nSummit on Islamophobia in 2021. She has testified twice about her research before the Canadian Senate\nhearings on Islamophobia in 2022-23. \nDr. Zine was a faculty member in the Critical Muslim Studies Institute on Decolonial Struggles and Liberation\nTheologies in Granada\, Spain. She is co-founder of the International Islamophobia Studies Research\nAssociation (ISSRA). In Canada\, she served as the co-chair of the Islamophobia sub-committee of the Ontario\nAnti-Racism Directorate. \nThe Everding Distinguished Lectureship was created in partnership between Iliff and Saint John’s Episcopal\nCathedral of Denver\, supported by the annual fund from Ms. Lee Everding\, a member of the Cathedral\, whose\nlate husband was a dean at Iliff. This lecture series seeks to educate the community on inter-religious and\nintercultural topics while nurturing the spiritual life of both communities.
