SUMMARY:Pulpit+ Exchange Presents: Dr. Albert Hernandez
DESCRIPTION:Register \nThe Holy Spirit Throughout History – Join us one week before Pentecost 2023 for great food\, informative teaching\, and robust discussion.\nAbout the Evening’s Lecture \nWhy does the Holy Spirit show up in such mysterious and vastly different ways across history? Why did John Wesley hold such reverence for the importance of spiritual experience in Christian ministry and education? Why do annual commemorations of Pentecost often spark creative re-interpretations of tradition among so many reformers\, dissenters\, and visionaries while crying out prophetically against oppression and injustice in their own times? Join us one week before Pentecost 2023\, for a lively discussion about these ancient legacies and their continued role in Christian revitalization and healing based on Hernández’ book\, Subversive Fire: The Untold Story of Pentecost (Emeth Press\, 2011). \nAbout Pulpit+ Exchange \nIliff’s Pulpit+ Exchange Series (supported by the Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative from Lilly Endowment Inc.) provides space for a diverse array of ordained clergy and lay leaders to gather for a meal and grapple with challenging issues. One of the main goals of the Pulpit+ Exchange is to build congregations of people who will authentically study\, worship\, walk\, and act together across difference to create a just and equitable world. \nAbout the Evening’s Agenda \nJoin other clergy and lay leaders for a light meal from 5:00 pm to 5:30 pm (MST). The lecture will begin at 5:30 pm. An opportunity to ask Dr. Hernández questions and engage in discussions with colleagues will follow. \nAbout the Evening’s Lecturer \nHernández joined the Iliff faculty in 2001. He teaches courses in the history of Christianity from Medieval to Early Modern times with additional expertise in the history of the ancient Hellenistic-Roman period. His research and teaching areas include the history of mysticism and pneumatology; Muslim and Christian relations beginning with the Crusades; religious diversity in medieval Iberia and the Spanish Empire; and the history of medicine and pandemics. Hernández led the faculty design team that created the Authentic Engagement Program™ focusing his contribution on human flourishing and the philosophy of Happiness. \nHernández is the author of Subversive Fire: The Untold Story of Pentecost (Emeth Press)\, and co-author with Miguel De La Torre of The Quest for the Historical Satan (Fortress Press)\, a theological best-seller exploring Satan’s story and the problem of evil. He has addressed local\, regional\, and national gatherings and religious organizations about the legacies of the Crusades and Medieval Spain for a pluralistic\, interreligious post-9/11 world. \nHernández served as Iliff’s senior vice president for academic affairs and faculty dean from 2009 to 2017. His administrative service included serving as interim president\, chief operations officer\, and associate dean for academic affairs. He has over thirty years of experience in different educational settings as an administrator\, curriculum developer\, and successful change-agent for organizational management systems. His current writing projects and recent classes focus on medical history and spiritual healing; Italian Renaissance humanism after the Black Death; mysticism in the Spanish Reformation; and the history of social justice.

SUMMARY:Pulpit+ Exchange Presents: Dr. Antony Alumkal
DESCRIPTION:Register \nThe Evening’s Lecture \n“Why Progressive Christianity Isn’t Progressive Enough (And What It Would Take To Fix It)” with Dr. Antony Alumkal\, Associate Professor of Sociology of Religion at the Iliff School of Theology \nThe movement known as Progressive Christianity presents itself as advancing the Christian tradition by integrating cutting-edge knowledge and abandoning the oppressive tendencies of conservative forms of Christianity. But a critical look at the movement reveals that it is rife with white\, male\, and middle-class privilege. Additionally\, movement leaders have often relied on outdated scholarship and mirrored the thinking of the Christian Right. \nWe will discuss three of Progressive Christianity’s formative figures—Jesus Seminar founder Robert Funk\, biblical scholar Marcus Borg\, and Episcopal Bishop John Shelby Spong—and how their ideas failed to live up to the “progressive” label. We will then consider what a new Progressive Christianity 2.0 movement would need to do to avoid the shortcomings of its predecessor. \nPulpit+ Exchange \nIliff’s Pulpit+ Exchange Series (supported by the Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative from Lilly Endowment Inc.) provides space for a diverse array of ordained clergy and lay leaders to gather for a meal and grapple with challenging issues. One of the main goals of the Pulpit+ Exchange is to build congregations who will authentically study\, worship\, walk\, and act together across difference to create a just and equitable world. \nAbout the Evening’s Agenda \nJoin other clergy and lay leaders for a light meal from 5:00 pm to 5:30 pm (MST). The lecture will begin at 5:30 pm. An opportunity to ask Dr. Alumkal questions and engage in discussions with colleagues will follow. \nAbout the Lecturer \nAntony Alumkal’s research interests include the influence of race on religion in the United States\, the pseudoscientific and conspiratorial thinking of the American Christian Right\, and how the “Progressive Christianity” movement mirrors the fundamentalism that it criticizes. His book Paranoid Science: The Christian Right’s War on Reality has been praised by sociologists and science educators while condemned by the Christian Right leaders whose lies he exposed. \nhttps://ncse.ngo/preview-paranoid-science \nHis courses explore religion as a social phenomenon in the contemporary world. Recent courses taught include: \n\nCongregations\nLiberal and Evangelical Protestantism in the United States\nAtheists\, Secularists\, and Nones\nSJE Seminar: Christian Bioethics Debates\n\n“Following Iliff’s Purpose and Vision Statement for me means insisting on the truth in an increasingly post-truth world.”

SUMMARY:Iliff Pulpit+ Exchange with Dr. Eric C. Smith
DESCRIPTION:Pulpit+ Exchange Presents: “How The New Testament Became White (And How To Start Reading It Differently)” with Dr. Eric C. Smith \nPulpit+ Exchange \nIliff’s Pulpit+ Exchange Series (supported by the Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative from Lilly Endowment Inc.) provides space for a diverse array of ordained clergy and lay leaders to gather for a meal and grapple with challenging issues. One of the main goals of the Pulpit+ Exchange is to build congregations who will authentically study\, worship\, walk\, and act together across difference to create a just and equitable world. \nCome for a light meal (5:00 pm -5:30 pm MT) and stay for a lecture with a Q&A session to follow (5:30 pm – 7:00 pm MT). \nAbout The Night’s Lecture \n“How The New Testament Became White (And How To Start Reading It Differently)” with Dr. Eric C. Smith\, Assistant Professor of Early Christianity and Contemporary Christian Practices \nWhen white supremacists massed in Charlottesville for the Unite the Right rally in 2017\, citations from the New Testament covered their placards. When insurrectionists stormed the Capitol in 2021\, they quoted the New Testament as justification. Before a man opened fire at a synagogue near San Diego in 2019\, he posted a manifesto that included passages from Matthew\, John\, 1 Thessalonians\, and Revelation. Incident after incident has shown how entangled white supremacy is with Christianity and its texts. But it’s not just acts of violence where racism and the New Testament show up together. Similar (but subtler) patterns can be found in local congregations\, Christian education curricula\, seminary classrooms\, and the scholarly field of biblical studies itself. In recent years\, some biblical scholars have begun to grapple with this problem\, pointing out places where white supremacy permeates the study of the New Testament and asking whether it’s possible to ever study and read the text apart from patterns of domination. This evening\, we will examine how the New Testament is recruited and claimed by white supremacy and used by white supremacists\, and how scholars\, pastors\, students\, and laity can begin reading it differently. \nAbout the Lecturer \nDr. Eric Smith\, Assistant Professor of Early Christianity and Contemporary Christian Practices\, teaches in the fields of biblical studies and early Christianity\, co-directs Iliff’s Doctor of Ministry in Prophetic Leadership program\, and serves as liaison to the Disciples Seminary Foundation. His research and teaching center on a constellation of interests in the world of late antiquity\, including identity formation\, material culture and materialist approaches to religion\, and both ancient and modern interpretations of biblical texts. \nSmith is the author of four books and several articles and chapters. His book Sovereignties\, Spaces\, Subjects\, and Spirits: The Necropolitics of the Acts of the Apostles (SBL Press\, forthcoming) undertakes a postcolonial reading of the violence and belonging embedded in the text of Acts. An earlier book\, Jewish Glass and Christian Stone: A Materialist Mapping of the Parting of the Ways (Routledge 2018) examines material objects as markers of identities in Judeo-Christianity to tell the story of the “parting of the ways” through the material lives of Jews and Christians. Aimed to popular audiences\, Paul the Progressive? The Compassionate Christian’s Guide to Reclaiming the Apostle as an Ally (Chalice 2019) attempts to reclaim the apostle Paul for progressive Christian communities. Recent and forthcoming articles and chapters focus on materialist\, postcolonial\, and queer methodologies. \nSmith is past co-chair of the Early Jewish Christian Relations and Space\, Place\, and Lived Experience in Antiquity program units of the Society of Biblical Literature\, and he currently serves on the Art and Religions of Antiquity program unit. He is the co-editor of the Christianity section of Religion Compass. Smith is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with ministry experience in the United Methodist Church and the United Church of Christ. \nRegister
