What is the Local Pastor Licensing School?
Designed for those who are preparing to serve as Licensed Local Pastors, the Local Pastor Licensing School offers an 80-hour, intensive introduction to the role and tasks of United Methodist Clergy. This is one element of the requirements for licensure as a Local Pastor, and is often required for anyone who will serve as lead pastor of a church (contact your District Superintendent for more information).
The curriculum covers essentials in these areas:
- United Methodist History, Doctrine, and Theology
- Leadership and Administration
- Spiritual Formation
- Christian Education
- Congregational Care
- Mission, Evangelism, and Church Vitality
Note: Certification as a candidate is preferred, but not required, for participation in the Licensing School of the Rockies. Approval of a District Superintendent is required, as is assignment of a clergy mentor by a District Committee on Ordained Ministry or District Superintendent.
Classes are in session 8:00 am – 5:00 pm daily except:
- Sunday, August 11th (students are asked to attend a local UM church that day, and to take a Sabbath day from their studies), and
- Monday, August 12th (which includes evening activities in addition to our daytime classes).

Local Pastor Licensing School of the Rockies is a program of the Board of Ordained Ministry of the Mountain Sky Conference of the United Methodist Church. All core Licensing School faculty are clergy members of the Mountain Sky Conference. The event is hosted at the Iliff School of Theology, with facilitation support provided by Iliff’s ReSource program. It is not an Iliff program, and cannot be taken for credit.
How Registration Works (read this first)
Registration for Licensing School is a two-step process.
- First – after you have checked with your DS and/or DCOM to ensure that you will be approved to attend – click on the Registration link on this page. This will take you to a form on the Mountain Sky Conference website where you will enter information about yourself, your candidacy status, and contact information for your pastor and DS. For candidates outside of the Mountain Sky conference, this initial registration step requires payment of the non-refundable $75 registration fee.
- Second, once we have contacted your DS and your pastor, and you have been approved to attend the school, we will give you access to our online course page. Here you will find additional information about the event, including required texts. Candidates from outside of the Mountain Sky conference can also pay the remaining $575 tuition from the course page.
Registration deadline: July 24th.
Non-refundable registration fee of $75 is due at registration (this applies to non-Mountain Sky students only). Please confirm with your District Superintendent and/or District Committee on Ordained Ministry that you will be approved to attend prior to registering. If you have previously paid the registration fee but were unable to attend, contact the ReSource office before paying again.
$650 total tuition and registration fee per student.
We will contact you regarding paying the $575 balance once your registration has been accepted.
Important Note: Candidates from the Mountain Sky Conference are eligible to receive full tuition funding from the Ministerial Education Fund. Again, please ensure that your District Superintendent has approved your participation in Licensing School prior to registration. You will not need to pay a fee when you register.
Final tuition payment deadline is Tuesday, July 30th.

Since this is not an Iliff event, we cannot accept checks made out to the Iliff School of Theology, nor can we accept payment at the event itself.
Other Important Items
Attendance: As we are unable to offer make-up sessions, the standing policy of the Licensing School is that students must attend all class sessions and activities in order to receive a passing grade. This means being on-campus from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm each day of class, and present at evening activities (in addition to daytime classes) on the second Monday of classes.
Assessment: The faculty will evaluate every detail of your presence at the LPLS, including attendance, attentiveness, promptness, participation, poise, written work, intro speech, sermon, familiarity with the required reading, etc. These assessments are provided to your District Superintendent via email (each student receives a copy of their assessment report).
Registration fee includes a light breakfast, as well as lunch, on each day classes are in session.
Dietary Restrictions: We do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions and to provide a safe environment for those with food allergies, but these situations can combine in complicated ways. If you have food sensitivities and will therefore bring your own meals, please let us know that. We also restrict the food that can be shared on the common food tables, as we may know about food sensitivities that are not known to the entire class. This can also impact our ability to offer common elements for closing Communion.
Location & Accessibility
This event is held at the Iliff School of Theology, 2323 East Iliff Avenue, Denver. The main entrance to the facility is at the south end of the building, and is accessed from East Iliff Avenue. Please note that we have a secure campus, so older entrances (the north doors of Iliff Hall, and the breezeway between Iliff Hall and the newer buildings) are now locked at all times. Iliff’s facilities are ADA-compliant.
Visitor parking is available in the B lot. Parking is $2.00 per hour, to a maximum of $10.00 per day. On-street paid parking is also available on Gaylord Street just north of East Iliff Avenue. The parking garage at the Newman Center (the P lot) is also available, and can be accessed off of East Wesley Avenue between South University and South York Street. Registration fee does not include lodging. Some local hotels offer discounted rates for Iliff events. We will provide a list of hotels when you register. Please note that the hotels often require registration at least 14 days in advance of the event in order to receive the discount. If lodging costs are preventing you from applying, please .
Both the Iliff and the University of Denver campuses are smoke-free. Smoking is not allowed in buildings or anywhere on campus.
