Theme: Organizational Sustainability

How do you create cooperative and effective organizations? How do you fund them? How do you provide for long-term financial sustainability? This two-day, two-track event is designed to help you think through effective leadership in these critical areas.

Organizing Communities
with Rev. Dr. Curtis Brown

Church and non-profit leaders need a wider set of tools to engage and transform their churches, organizations and communities. In this workshop we’ll introduce the major principles and practices of community organizing, which provide a different approach to building and using power for community change.
Topics include:
– Analyzing and understanding power
– Building relationships for public change
– Focusing problems into actionable issues
– Creating actions for reactions
– Shaping organizations and movements
– Developing leaders for transformation
– Managing yourself, your time, and your interest

Track B, Day 1 (Wednesday, October 3):

Focus on Endowments
with Kristi Kinnison

Organizations that actively promote endowments see a 25-40% increase in operational giving. This is counterintuitive – but essential for you to understand if your want your church to thrive.
Questions we will address include:
– What inspires people to give money to your church?
– How can you overcome the tax law changes so that you don’t see a dip in giving?
– What is Impact Investing? And why should your church care about it?
– What is a healthy way to grow and manage an endowment program at your church?
– What key elements does a financially healthy church have? (Hint: It includes endowments.)

Track B, Day 2 (Thursday, October 4):

Focus on Grant & Foundation Funding
with Megan Conklin & Kelsey Cochrane

Non-profit organizations can often find outside sources to assist with funding new ventures, needed capital expenses, and more. In this workshop, we will discuss obtaining and managing grant funds.

Topics include:

– Identifying potential funders
– Ways to think about networking & relationship building
– The basics of grant writing – how to tell your story
– Building helpful budget projections
– Important concepts about grant fund management
– Basic records-keeping for annual reports
