For Iliff, right here in Denver, getting to know the history of our city’s LGBTQ+ community isn’t just a side note – it’s key to our whole idea of fairness and freedom. If we ignore this history, we’re missing out on the real lives of people around us.

The story of LGBTQ+ Denver is a big part of our local fight for justice. When we learn about the challenges and wins of activists here, it helps us see how power works and what it takes to be truly inclusive.

For anyone studying religion in Denver, understanding this local history is fundamental. Looking at how different faith groups here have interacted with the LGBTQ+ community helps us rethink old ideas and build more welcoming and supportive faith spaces right here in our city.

Bringing Denver’s LGBTQ+ history into what we learn at Iliff makes us more understanding and connected to our city. It shows our LGBTQ+ students, alumni/ae, and supporters that their stories matter and helps everyone become more caring leaders in our diverse Denver community. When people share their own experiences, it reminds us how important local resources and support are.

Bottom line? If you’re going to lead a faith community, nonprofit, or in other  Denver spaces, you need to understand the issues that matter to LGBTQ+ folks here. Knowing their history gives you the background and skills to be fair and supportive in our local churches and beyond.

So, for Iliff, learning about Denver’s LGBTQ+ history isn’t just about the past – it’s about making sure we’re doing our part to build a more just and welcoming future for everyone in our city. It’s the right thing to do.
